Monaca’s cloud-based system enables simultaneous cross-platform programming for applications

Even as web and mobile applications expand in utility and ubiquity, cross-platform adaptation for different programming languages remains a challenge. Monaca Inc. offers a simple, Cloud-based development environment that enables programs to be created for different languages simultaneously, eliminating the need to recode for different platforms.

As mobile and web applications become increasingly crucial to our lives, it’s equally crucial that these apps be developed for multiple platforms in a simple, efficient and cost-effective manner. Monaca . has created a developers’ environment that makes this possible.

“Mobile applications are complex and problematic, and are very difficult to set up,” says Monaca founder and CEO Masahiro Tanaka. “While people want to make mobile apps, they don’t have the environment to create the source code. What we’ve done is solved that issue.”

Cloud-Based Environment

Monaca is a Cloud-driven, open-standard environment for the development of professional PC, Internet-of-Things (IoT) and mobile applications. Typically, apps are created using their respective operating system’s native programming language: Swift for iPhone and Java for Android. This complicates the process of creating apps for different platforms, as a developer has to essentially code the same app twice.

Monaca utilizes JavaScript – in addition to HTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) – which allows the source code to be translated for the iPhone and Android simultaneously, effectively increasing output rate. That JavaScript is a widely used, easy-to-learn programming language is another major draw.

“The framework we created makes it possible for an app to function on the iPhone as if it were designed specifically for the iPhone,” Tanaka explains. “And when transferred to Android, the displays would be different, as the app would be automatically modified for the system. The user can experience the app and not notice that it was created on a cross-platform environment.”

Global Reach

Monaca places great importance on owning intellectual properties, including its source code, registered trademarks and patents, to differentiate itself from competitors. “Compared to other cross-platform environments, Monaca is very easy to use and the apps it creates are very professional,” Tanaka says.

Monaca is already being used by approximately 150,000 developers internationally, with clientele including growing numbers of educational institutions and enterprises, such as Hitachi, Fujitsu, TV Asahi and footwear manufacturer Asics. The company has also entered into a partnership with open-source software juggernaut Red Hat.

Monaca Inc.’s Tokyo office.

Self-funded with 30 Tokyo-based staff, including noted engineers from around the world – as well as a U.S. branch established in 2016 – Monaca plans to expand further into countries such as India and Brazil. As the use of tablets and smartphones in business becomes more common in these regions, Tanaka expects the demand for mobile app creation to grow.

As Monaca accelerates globally, Tanaka is seeking investors to support its expansion. As long as there are developers looking for fast, flexible, muti-platform solutions, there will be a healthy market for Monaca.
