Navigating Japan: A Global Welcome to Vibrancy and Talent

January 2024

Discover an unexpected truth: Moving to Japan, once deemed a colossal challenge, has evolved into an enticing prospect. Impenetrable cultural mysteries and language barriers are no longer stand as insurmountable hurdles. Japan, which actively seeks global talent, is warmly welcoming individuals and families from abroad by providing the elements of an international hub with its inherent hospitality. Delve into the surprising facets that render Japan an inviting destination, offering not just opportunities but a vibrant cultural tapestry.

It is well known by now that Tokyo and other Japanese cities are comfortable places to live. In the Global Power City Index (GPCI), published by the Mori Memorial Foundation in 2023, Tokyo ranked third, behind only London and New York. The well-known convenience of Tokyo's public transportation and the attractiveness of its dining were the top factors behind its placement, but the city also received high marks for its low cost of living, large number of retail stores, and other lifestyle conveniences.

A Global Mindset and Streamlined Visa Process

It was once widely thought that beyond Japan's facade of charm and orderliness, a revelation awaited—cumbersome traditions deeply rooted in daily life and bureaucratic processes. Yet, the surprising twist lies in the nation's transformative journey. An increasingly global mindset, government initiatives, and inherent hospitality have turned once intricate procedures into a streamlined, accessible process.

Sarah Pharathikoune, a customer success manager with digital transformation facilitator i-5O, came to Japan with her husband in early 2023. "Once we arrived, there were then a number of programs we had to register with, but our local city hall was very helpful in walking us through all of the steps. They even had people there who could provide assistance in several different languages."

In 2023, Japan introduced visa reforms, easing entry for skilled foreign workers. Those with a five-year visa can apply for permanent residency after one year, a boon for upper management and those with advanced degrees. This strategic initiative aims to attract high-caliber professionals.

Cultural Integration and Language Accessibility

Embarking on daily life in a foreign culture, especially for spouses and children outside the corporate bubble, once seemed a formidable challenge. However, contemporary Japan defies the old stereotype of inward looking and language barriers. Over the past years, an influx of foreigners engaging in business and work, coupled with a surge in pre- and post-pandemic tourism, has painteda vibrant tapestry of cultural mix, dispelling outdated perceptions.

"Japan already has a relatively large foreign population, so almost everyone here, especially in the major cities, encounters people from around the world on a daily basis." Kim Youngmin, Managing Director of SBJ Bank Futures Lab came to Japan with his wife and two children in 2023. Fortunately, Japan has a very international culture compared to many nations in Asia. "Sometimes when people have only limited exposure to foreign cultures, they develop 'foreigner allergies' but this is something I haven't experienced in Japan."

Even in the contemporary era, the persistent belief that the Japanese language is an arduous task for non-native speakers remains a formidable obstacle that has yet to be completely dispelled. Contrary to such assumptions, with high standard of education and IT technologies, Japan has harvested multilingual information services, shattering any preconceived notions that might act as obstacles to your life in the country.

Japan's allure transcends its innate charm, embracing multilingualism as a newfound virtue. Paired with unparalleled public safety, healthcare accessibility, and meticulously managed, expansive transportation networks, it emerges as an epitome of allure and convenience. Renowned for its extensive, reliable, and high-speed transportation, Japan surprises non-Japanese speakers with accessibility. Recent initiatives, including multilingual signage and interpretation apps, enhance the travel experience. The standout feature lies in the seamless interconnectedness of Japan's transit system, offering efficient city-to-city travel without cumbersome check-ins or reservations—an optimal choice for both locals and global adventurers. In almost all cities, the streets are sanitary, and street crime, such as purse-snatching, is among the lowest in the industrialized world.

Nearly everyone in Japan has studied English as part of their secondary education, and English has become an increasingly common part of primary education for the past two decades. Most local government offices, where residents will be able to sign up for health insurance and many other services, are also multilingual, as most large businesses and retail chains.

Education System and Support

For people bringing their families and children to Japan, there are many options available to help them smoothly integrate into the education system. "We found that the ward we lived in offered a Japanese-as-a-second-language (JSL) program for elementary school students, so our children could take those classes three days a week while they were enrolled in the local elementary school, which has really helped them to adjust and make new friends," says Kim.

In addition to private international schools, public schools welcome students from overseas, and can provide intensive Japanese-as-a-second-language instruction to help them catch up with the native-speaker students. Teachers and administrators will often work together with parents to help them in their child's instruction and integration. Japan also has many schools that have International Baccalaureate certification, providing curriculums that allow students to integrate smoothly with schools in other countries.

Japan's enduring allure extends in 21st century. In seamlessly marrying its storied traditions with contemporary marvels like multilingualization and cutting-edge technology, Japan emerges not only as a residence but as an enchanting lifestyle destination. The culmination of hospitality, culture, and innovation renders Japan an alluring haven, inviting global residents to partake in its dynamic and sophisticated way of life.
