In the Global Power City Index (GPCI), published by the Mori Memorial Foundation in 2023, Tokyo ranked third, behind only London and New York. The well-known convenience of Tokyo's public transportation and the attractiveness of its dining were the top factors behind its placement, but the city also received high marks for its low cost of living, large number of retail stores, and other lifestyle conveniences.

"Japan already has a relatively large foreign population, so almost everyone here, especially in the major cities, encounters people from around the world on a daily basis." Kim Youngmin, Managing Director of SBJ Bank Futures Lab came to Japan with his wife and two children in 2023. Fortunately, Japan has a very international culture compared to many nations in Asia. "Sometimes when people have only limited exposure to foreign cultures, they develop 'foreigner allergies' but this is something I haven't experienced in Japan."

Even in the contemporary era, the persistent belief that the Japanese language is an arduous task for non-native speakers remains a formidable obstacle that has yet to be completely dispelled. Contrary to such assumptions, with high standard of education and IT technologies, Japan has harvested multilingual information services, shattering any preconceived notions that might act as obstacles to your life in the country.

In almost all cities, the streets are sanitary, and street crime, such as purse-snatching, is among the lowest in the industrialized world.

Nearly everyone in Japan has studied English as part of their secondary education, and English has become an increasingly common part of primary education for the past two decades. Most local government offices, where residents will be able to sign up for health insurance and many other services, are also multilingual, as most large businesses and retail chains.

For people bringing their families and children to Japan, there are many options available to help them smoothly integrate into the education system. "We found that the ward we lived in offered a Japanese-as-a-second-language (JSL) program for elementary school students, so our children could take those classes three days a week while they were enrolled in the local elementary school, which has really helped them to adjust and make new friends," says Kim.

In addition to private international schools, public schools welcome students from overseas, and can provide intensive Japanese-as-a-second-language instruction to help them catch up with the native-speaker students. Teachers and administrators will often work together with parents to help them in their child's instruction and integration. Japan also has many schools that have International Baccalaureate certification, providing curriculums that allow students to integrate smoothly with schools in other countries.
